Concordia 2000, Kronplatz, Toboggan run Panorama...
Concordia 2000 (the biggest bell in the Alps)
In summer 2003, a huge bell with a panoramic relief of the surrounding mountains, was installed on top of the Kronplatz, on 2,275 m above sea level. A platform, which diameter is11 m, was disposed in central position. A steel belfry erected on top of it, holds the bell "Concordia", and the mechanics. The bell`s diameter is 3,000 mm, its height 3, it is110 mm high, and its weight is18.100 kg. The clapper weighs 500 kg. The bell is operated electrically.
The bell tolls on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunndays at 12.00 p.m., and every time when a country abolishes death penalty, when a condemned is pardoned, or when a war is ended. Concordia is the biggest bell in the Alpine regions.
Kronplatz
A brief history of the development of the skiing area Kronplatz
The pioneers: There had been the wish of connecting all the communities around the Kronplatz, and already before World War I the construction of a cable way had existed on paper.
Because of the war and the following years of social and economical depression, the cable way could not be realised. On 19th January 1938, however, the "Funivia Dolomiti Monte Corona" corporation held a meeting, where they discussed on installing a cable way from Reischach up to the Kronplatz, operating only during the summer months. It was thought to enlarge the activity also to the winter months, and so a massive propaganda was initiated.
The project had all the necessary approvals by the local authorities, but it lacked of investors.
The sum needed amounted to 1 million Italian Lire. Because of these difficulties the corporation was liquidated.
In the 50s a further attempt was made, but again it was doomed to failure, as it got hardly any back up.
The construction of the cable way to the Kronplatz
In 1959 Ernst Lüfter took the project up again, and together with some citizens of Bruneck he founded the "Kronplatz Seilbahn Genossenschaft m.b.H.", with a stock of 550,000 Lire. A few months later, the cooperative was changed into a corporation -"Kronplatz Seilbahn AG Bruneck", the joint capital amounted to 1 million of Lire. Unfortunately, a series of bureaucratic problems nearly impeded the realization of the project.
Finally, in 1963 the construction works for the "Belvedere Skilift" began, and the lift started to operate on Christmas 1963. With this the first step towards development of the mountain was made.
A long way to success
The revenues were disappointing after the first winter season. Nevertheless the corporation decided to build two further skilifts at the north side of the Kronplatz. Financial breakdown seemed to be inevitable. Only some Austrian banks were willing to grant credit. Eventually, other bank institutes followed the Austrian example. In 1967 the construction of the “Sonnenlift” on the south flank of the mountain brought an interesting novelty for the upcoming winter season. Immediately afterwards, a restaurant was built on top of the mountain, and a new and demanding ski piste in direction to Reischach was opened, which valorized the skiing area considerably.
In 1972 an apartment house was built and the apartments were sold to tourists. The skiing seasons were getting more and more profitable. The numbers of skiers grew fast, and it was necessary to build further lifts in order to diminish the queues. In 1973 the chair lift "Hernegg" was built, as well as the skilift"Pramstall".
Building activities received a major boost also at the Olang and the Enneberg side of the Kronplatz. In 1964 the "Alpenlift GmbH" (Ltd) was founded in Olang. Its first venture was the building of the skilift "Alpenlift" in 1965, followed by the construction of further lifts in the years between 1968 and 1972 ("Prackenlift", "Gassl"). From the old corporation emerged the "Olanger Seilbahnen GmbH". Its primary task was to modernize and rationalize the existing lifts. The Pracken and Alpenlift got substituted by a modern cable way.
In 1963 the newly founded "Skiarea Miara GmbH" built the first lift to the Furkelpass, and in 1967 followed the first lift to the top of the Kronplatz.
In 1973 the tree corporations joined forces and founded the consortium "Skirama". Today the Kronplatz boasts 24 lifts, chairlifts and cable ways included.

Toboggan Run "Panorama”
Olang boasts a long and successful tradition of luge on artificial track. Several world champions and Olympic medal winners come from Olang: Paul Ambrosi, Karl Brunner, Erich Graber, Hans Graber, Andreas Jud, Oswald Pörnbacher, Hansjörg Raffl, Günther Steinhauser. These successful athletes were the best ambassadors for the holiday resort Olang.
Olang is also famous as host for international luge competitions: in 1972 the World Championships, and in 1975 and 1980 the European Championship, and further national and international competitions. But after some years the toboggan run, prepared with natural instead of artificial ice, did not meet the standards any longer. So the local sports association decided to build a toboggan run for natural ice, the toboggan run "Panorama“, which had been realized just in time for the World Championships of Luge on natural ice in 1998. The "Panorama“ run is one of the most modern toboggan runs for natural ice in the world, equipped with flood lights for night tobogganing. Again in 2000, the World Championships were held here, which saw the participation of more than 100 athletes from 25 nations.
